At about 12:30 a.m. Friday morning, Tom Ryan awoke to a noise he never will forget.“It’s hard to describe. It was like screaming steel,” he said. “It brought me right out of my bed.”The sound was the metal roof being ripped off the attached shed on his mobile home in Country Aire Estates, a seniors-only mobile home park off U.S. 301, south of Dade City. As dawn broke, the magnitude of the storm that struck the mobile home park became clear.“I’m fortunate,” Ryan said. “I got off lightly compared to some of my neighbors.”By 7 a.m., Pasco County’s newly hired emergency management director, Kevin Guthrie, was on the scene, assessing the extent of damage reportedly caused by winds with speeds of 40 to 60 mph. After surveying the damage to 65 mobile homes, Guthrie was not convinced that strong winds alone caused the destruction.
